Description Providence Saint John's Health Center is a 266-bed
hospital that was founded in 1942 by the Sisters of Charity of
Leavenworth, who in 2014 passed its sponsorship to Providence
Health & Services. The hospital has 926 physicians on its medical
staff and 1,900 employees. The hospital continually achieves top
ratings and distinguished hospital awards for clinical excellence
and patient safety by the nation's leading accreditation
organizations such as Healthgrades, The Joint Commission and
Leapfrog Group. Its core service lines include heart and vascular
care, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedics and women's health. St.
John's is home to the world-renowned John Wayne Cancer Institute,
dedicated to clinical research and medical advancements in cancer
care. THE ROLE Reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer
and is responsible for the strategic planning and operational
leadership for Nursing Services. The CNO is accountable for the
provision and quality of all nursing services at a facility level
in support of Providence Health & Services System and Regional
goals. This includes strategically ensuring a balance of optimal
and efficient patient care; staff, patient, and physician
satisfaction; and cooperative partnerships with other
organizational departments and professional groups. With a constant
focus on patient-centeredness and staff and patient safety, the CNO
creates and maintains standards and systems for care delivery at
their facility. These systems of care delivery promote
evidence-based practice and are designed to support the management
of productivity targets, patient acuity, and appropriate planning
for and use of available resources. Continuously monitors changes
in Magnet - standards to ensure the Hospital continuously adheres
to all standards and requirements. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Adheres to policies, procedures and pertinent contracts related
to scope and responsibilities.
- Directs the formulation and implementation of patient care
policies, procedures and standards of nursing practice for PSJHC.
Standards include, but are not limited to, the American
Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), the American Nurses
Association (ANA) and the California Board of Registered
Nursing.
- Has a working knowledge of HR policies and procedures and
adheres to them.
- Responsible for overseeing/mentoring compliance with standards
of regulatory agencies. These include, but are not limited to, the
Department of Human Services, the Joint Commission, the Board of
Registered Nursing and community agencies.
- Assures compliance to the Providence Integrity Program.
- Has a strong knowledge of the bargaining unit agreement for
represented employees and manages this relationship
effectively.
- Serves as an active member of the Senior Leadership team.
- Works closely with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to enhance
nurse/physician collaboration and promote optimum patient and
family experience and clinical outcomes.
- Initiates or recommends, in collaboration with
managers/supervisors, staffing standards and staff selection
criteria, e.g. compassion and critical thinking skills. Ensures
standards of performance are developed and implemented, performance
evaluated, and appropriate personnel actions are taken in
coordination with Human Resource Partners. Provides clarity,
continuity and a sense of stability and purpose. Continues to
foster a sense of professionalism among the nursing staff to
further elevate the standards of nursing practice.
- Leads the development of a Nursing and Interprofessional
Strategic Plan with specific goals and objectives.
- Ensures there is a Council responsible for monitoring the
development, approval and implementation of clinical standards and
policies and procedures. Works closely with leaders in Quality,
Infection Prevention and Patient Experience to continuously improve
the clinical and patient experience outcomes. Works closely with
Human Resources and Talent Acquisition on work force planning and
recruitment and retention.
- Develops budget for the division and allocates funds within
budget to accomplish objectives. In coordination with assigned
Directors/Managers monitors variances against budget. Reviews all
requests for capital expense items and follows the current process
for submission for approvals.
- Directs the preparation and maintenance of reports. Prepares
periodic reports for appropriate executive leadership, as
required.
- Consults with and advises appropriate executive leadership of
problems related to the operation of the hospital/departments and
Nursing Services; recommends changes in administrative policies and
current structures and processes to carry out objectives more
effectively.
- Develops, monitors, and evaluates program development to
include financial, marketing, human resource, ethics, and community
needs.
- Identifies strategic issues impacting the organization and the
effective delivery of nursing care, treatment and services and the
structure, process and outcome implications.
- Serves as a coach and mentor to direct reports and to nurse
leaders throughout the organization.
- Provides and maintains effective communications with medical
staff, the community, and all levels of supervision and staff.
Rounds for improved visibility and to meet specific goals such as
safety.
- Ensures the departments/areas comply with regulatory
requirements.
- Identifies patient/client needs and develops quality programs
to meet those needs as needed and in coordination with other
hospital leaders. Ensures delivery of quality services for
inpatients/outpatients and all customers.
- Analyzes and evaluates clinical services to continuously
improve nursing practice efficiency and effectiveness.
- Actively leads the Shared Governance System and advocates for
appropriate resources to support staff nurse involvement in any
decisions that affect the practice environment, e.g. supplies,
policies, environment design, staffing methods etc.
- Works together with other CNOs within the California Region,
with the Regional CNO and with other key Region/System
leaders.
- Assists with Region and System initiatives as appropriate.
- Develops and determines priorities and monitors status of
special projects on an ongoing basis.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars,
workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest
trends in field of expertise.
- Participates in hospital/medical staff committee meetings as
required. Attends and serves on professional/civic service
organizations as a representative, and conducts/attends
departmental meetings.
- Develops effective retention and recruitment strategies.
Constantly assesses staffing options in a creative fashion;
establishes local best practices and inculcates top practices
available from Tenet. Assures strong leadership, accomplished
through a positive team approach, resulting in achievement of
standards for all service lines, both inpatient and
ambulatory.
- Constantly demonstrates a passionate devotion to excellence and
service in dealing with all internal and external customers; is
extraordinarily responsive to needs and desires; offers the best
possible solutions while displaying the best possible values.
- Ensures effective, efficient and economical patient care
outcomes. Leads initiatives to continually assess productivity and
throughput to optimize resources.
- Ensures that the rights of all patients are respected and
maintained by allowing for privacy, cultural diversity and dignity
in the provision of care.
- Oversees and coordinates the development of the PSJHC Plan for
the Provision of Care.
- Collaborates with management in the formation of marketing
plans to support business plans associated with patient care
programs. QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing; or Master's Degree in
Nursing
- Master's Degree does not have to be in Nursing, if holds
BSN
- Master's Degree (MSN) or higher degree in Nursing
(preferred)
- MHA/MBA/MS/MPH/MSN in health care administration or nursing
specialty field (preferred)
- Upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor
Managed)
- Upon hire: Board Certification in Nurse Leadership
(preferred)
- Progressive management experience in hospital/health care
environment.
- 10 or more years of progressive leadership experience as a
Nurse Leader.
- Experience as a Director or Administrator of Nursing
Departments.
- CNO experience (preferred)
- Nursing Director or CNO experience in a Magnet Designated
hospital (preferred)
- Excellent human relations and oral/written communication
